DeafQueer Chat Troubleshooting Tips

Having trouble logging into DeafQueer Chat?

We've complied some troubleshooting tips to assist you. Try each solution in the order listed:

  1. This is an example of what the login box/button should look like. You should see the word "Nickname" with an empty field next to it where you type in your name (to be used in the chatroom). You then press the "Connect" button to log into the chatroom. If this is not coming up on your screen, your web browser or computer may be having trouble interacting with the chatroom software. The tips on this page should hopefully help you solve this.

  2. Using WebTV? Unfortunately, our chatroom software does not currently work with WebTV. You'll need an actual computer to access our chatroom.

  3. Our chatroom uses Java technology. While the chatroom itself is amazingly fast (once you've logged in), the login process itself can be a bit slow and requires some patience.

We have reformatted our site so that the chatroom login box automatically pops up on your screen in another window when you first enter our main chatroom page. In this extra screen you should see a login box with the word "Nickname" and a button that says "Connect". It may take a minute or two to appear. Enter a Nickname and press Connect. Please be patient if you are not connected right away. It takes the software a couple of minutes to connect you. Once connected, the DeafQueer chatroom will pop up on your screen. Do not close your web browser or you will have to log back in again.

  4. If no popup box appears, click here to enter the chatroom.

  5. If after 5 minutes you're unable to log into the chatroom, reload/refresh your web browser. This will usually do the trick. If this doesn't work, go to the next tip.

  6. Clear your web browser cache. You do this by selecting the Prefences at the top of your web browser menu and then the option for your browser cache. For example, in Internet Explorer 5.2.3 on a Mac, it looks like this. Your settings may vary depending on your browser version and platform.

  7. Make sure you are using the most current version of Internet Explorer, Netscape or Safari. Other web browsers may also work. AOL users should download and use stand-alone versions of these browsers and not AOL's built-in web browser. AOL's web browser does not work well with our chatroom software.

  8. DeafQueer Chat is Java-based. Be sure you have the latest Java software installed on your computer. If you're using a Mac, you'll need Macintosh Runtime for Java. Your computer should already have this but if it doesn't, you can download it here. If you're using a Windows computer, you need the latest version of Sun Java Virtual Machine. Download it here.

  9. The chatroom applet is memory intensive. For best results, your computer should have at least 128 MB of memory and be running the latest OS version.

  10. Try entering the Chatroom using our Lite Version. This version is non-graphical. You'll be able to chat and see who is in the chatroom but you won't be able to see or take advantage of the graphics and user icons when using this version.

  11. If all of the above have failed, your computer may be too old for the chatroom software. Bummer.
